Metro Outreach helps runaway, homeless youth

by Maureen Havélka

Cleveland-Metro Youth Outreach is run through the Cleveland LGBT Center in collaboration with over 40 other area agencies and is funded by Cuyahoga County Department of Children and Family Services.

The program strives to help adolescents who are homeless, have run away or are at risk of becoming homeless by providing medical care, preventative services, STD and HIV testing, pregnancy testing, referrals to services, case management and hygiene kits to youth in need.

Since its launch in January, MYO has been able to provide service to over 30

young people and hopes to continue growing in order to serve the needs of as many youth as possible in the Cleveland area.

This spring, MYO began a publicity campaign on Regional Transit Authority bus stop kiosks in the downtown area.

MYO staff, which include a medical doctor, a social worker, a program specialist, an HIV tester and volunteers, sets out in a medical van every Thursday to two separate locations in order to assist the needs of the youth.

For more information about locations or the MYO program in general, call 216651-5428 (651-LGBT) ext 17.

Maureen Havelka is an Metro Youth Outreach case manager.
